This article was prepared by Mons. Javier Muñoz Mora. He has been linked always to the Seminary, first like student in the group of the foundation, later like professor and director during 10 years. Now he continues being a teacher and spiritual director of the seminary. |
It is worthwhile to give a look to the historic development of this work of "our National Seminary of Christ Priest" (Cristo Sacerdote National Seminary) because it will help us, undoubtedly, to understand better its identity and its mission, its achievements and hopes, like it will also serve us in order to value it more and better.
The connection of Mons. Alfonso Uribe Jaramillo with our seminary is a very well-known fact for whom have followed its history up close. He was the inspiring, author, impeller, first rector and supporter in every thing. It is not easy to understand what is the seminary without looking at the person and feels of Mons. Alfonso.
When Mons. Alfonso made his specialization in Theology, in Canada, he knew the difficulties for an applicant to the priesthood, especially when he had arrived to the grown age, in that time in which was almost necessary to have passed the minor seminary. So, Mons. Alfonso conceived the idea of searching for the manner of no having this difficulty. Later, being director of the Seminary of Medellín, he made an experience with a small group of professionals in the same seminary for them. The result of this was the ordination of the first promotion of the named priests of "late vocations.
A little later of having made this experience in the seminary of Medellín, Mons. Alfonso was named parish of Sonsón (a city south of Medellín), he was in that job when the diocese of this same name was created, then of course he belonged to.
Mons. Alberto Uribe Urdaneta, first bishop of Sonsón, named Mons. Alfonso his general vicar, and he supported the purpose of Mons. Alfonso of finding a seminary for vocations of adults in the diocese.
So, February 8 of 1959 was erected our seminary that was named of Christ Priest, according to its founder will, in commendation of the Priesthood of Christ. The same day the seminary was inaugurated with seven students. In the following days, the rest of seminarians arrived until 14 students were completed.
The life of the seminary, in its beginnings, was a valuable experience of family life, of faith and of trust. Everything was made with rudimentary elements, beginning for the house. The classes were in the dining room, in the corridors of the house or under a tree. The things, in their external appearance, they were in miniature and they gave little security, but it inwardly was the faith of Mons. Alfonso in the divine forethought and the trust of small men's group that without looking at the appearances they undertook the adventure of the vocation.
The strong study, the intense spiritual life, the incipient pastoral, all combined with the material work: cultivation of the orchard, careful to the gardens and grasslands, also the firewood for the preparation of the meals because the electric fluid didn't give for more than the illumination and yet gas was unknown.
Later we thought of the first constructions and, because the seminary was very poor, ourselves had to collaborate in the preparation and transport of materials. Every one helped: priests, religious and seminarians.
The following year, 1960, began with 47 students and the new chapel was almost finished. The seminary grew in its physical plant every day, in number of students and in hopes. At the beginning it was necessary to search for religious neighboring borrowed houses, because Mons. Alfonso in their generosity never looked at the available places in order to know how many seminarians could receive.
The year of 1963 had a special meaning because of the first fruits of the seminary: six priests, ordained by Mons. Alfonso Uribe, eleven days later of himself having been ordained like Bishop.
As usual, also the difficult times arrived to the seminary. In 1966, contrary winds blew against the seminary. It was the time of the "answer" (as marxist style) and the seminary seemed to collapse. We, in that time, listened from Mons. Alfonso the following phrase: "If the seminary is work of God, He will continue to support it, if it is the work of men, it will perish".
Already 47 years had passed from the foundation of the seminary. Its fruits are already more than 1000 priests dispersed for over the world. They are live testimony of the meaning of our seminary, It will continue be glory to the priesthood of Christ, if it continues to be the work of God and not of men.
